SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a matchup of teams that tied for first in the preseason poll, Santa Clara women's soccer tied No. 4 BYU 2-2 Saturday to open West Coast Conference play.
The Broncos (6-5-1, 0-0-1 WCC) snapped the Cougars (10-0-1, 0-0-1 WCC) 10-match winning streak to open the season and became the first team to lead by more than one goal and hold a lead at halftime. Santa Clara was also just the second team to hold a lead over BYU which lasted a season-long 62 minutes.
The Broncos got the scoring going early off a free kick to make it 1-0. In the sixth minute, Kelsey Turnbow was taken down just outside the box. Kelcie Hedge took the chance and finished a perfect strike in the upper-left corner of the goal.
Santa Clara stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 34th. Kaitlyn Parcell found Maddy Gonzalez in the box and after a few touches, she finished a perfect shot low and inside the far post.
A bit of luck for the Cougars and bad fortune for the Broncos in the 42nd minute got BYU on the board. A scramble in the box allowed Ashton Brockbank to knock a ball into the goal and make it 2-1.
BYU then evened things up at 2-all in the 68th minute when through ball from Elise Flake found Cameron Tucker in the box who had just the keeper to beat.
Courtney Ogren had a solid game in net, making five saves while her opposite number Sabrina Davis had two.
