Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year Lead Women's Soccer's WCC Accolades

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The 20th ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team had seven players honored by the West Coast Conference Tuesday, led by Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year nods.

Junior Alex Loera was named the Defensive Player of the Year as well as First Team All-West Coast Conference with Izzy D'Aquila being named the Freshman of the Year as well as Second Team All-WCC and Freshman All-WCC.

Kelsey Turnbow brought home first team honors with Julie Doyle and Kelcie Hedge being named to the second team. Maddy Gonzalez was honorable mention and Emma Reeves was all-freshman.

Loera has started all 19 games that she played in while adding four goals and three assists. She has been an anchor for a defense that has nine shutouts on the season. Last season Loera was First Team All-West Region and First Team All-WCC after being named second team and all-freshman in 2017.

D'Aquila is tied for the team lead with 14 goals, which is tied for the most in the country among freshmen and one off Santa Clara's program record of 15 set in 1993 by Mikka Hansen. She has scored multiple goals four times this season and has added four assists for 32 points.

Turnbow is 11th in the country with 38 points and 19th with 10 assists to go along with a team-high tying 14 goals. She was the WCC Freshman of the Year in 2017 as well as first team and all-freshman while being named First Team All-West region. Last season she was once again First Team All-WCC and First Team All-West Region.

Doyle has found the back of the net twice and added five assists while playing in all 20 games. As a freshman, she was name First Team All-WCC and all-freshman.

Hedge has started all 20 matches and scored five times with eight assists, second on the team. The 2018 WCC Player of the Year was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist last season as well as First Team All-America, First Team All-West Region, and First Team All-WCC.

Gonzalez has played in all 20 games and scored five goals with four assists. This is her fourth honor after being name all-freshman in 2016, second team in 2017, and honorable mention a year ago.

Reeves has appeared in 17 games and started 15 while scoring a goal and adding an assist out of the back.

The Broncos will host Cal Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
