SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball announced the 10th member of its incoming 2021 recruiting class, Robert Hipwell, a three-sport athlete from Santa Cruz, California.

"I chose Santa Clara University because of its excellent academic reputation and location in Silicon Valley," said Hipwell.  "I like that Santa Clara focuses on the growth of the whole person and mission to help others.  Most important, I get to play baseball at a great Division I program with excellent coaches plus Stephen Schott Stadium and the new Athletic Excellence Center are top facilities."

The left-handed hitting corner infielder also played basketball and football for Scotts Valley High School where he was named 2018 Lineman of the Year.

During his sophomore season, the 6-foot-2 Hipwell posted a .391 batting average and a .571 on-base percentage for the Falcons.  His junior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the spring of 2020, Hipwell was named preseason California Region Honorable Mention by Rawlings Perfect Game before hitting. 429 with a .529 on-base percentage over the summer for his travel team.

"Robert is a powerful three-sport athlete out of Scotts Valley High who also plays for Trosky Baseball in the summer.  At 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, we expect his left-handed bat to be a physical threat in the heart of our order over the next couple of years," said Broncos head coach Rusty Filter.  "We are always excited to bring in local talent."

An honor roll student, Hipwell has taken multiple honors and International Baccalaureate classes.
