Baseball Opens Conference Play Hosting Gonzaga This Weekend
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara baseball begins West Coast Conference play hosting Gonzaga this weekend.  The first pitch of the three game series is at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday concluding with a noon start to Sunday's series finale.

Due to current State of California guidelines, spectators will not be permitted inside Stephen Schott Stadium. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus. The general public is allowed only to 'pass through' campus, such as on a walk, but no lingering, gathering, lounging, etc. is permitted.

This weekend's matchup will mark the Broncos' first WCC games since May 18, 2019 when they hosted BYU in the 2019 season finale.

The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic the week the Broncos and the Bulldogs were set to meet.

This series will begin a stretch of playing eight games in 10 days for Santa Clara (6-9) who will play a two-game midweek series at Oregon State next week (March 23 and 24) followed by a conference series at Portland next weekend (March 26 - 28).  The trip up to Oregon will mark the only time the Broncos will travel out of state during the regular season.

Gonzaga (8-8) played two nationally-ranked opponents last week, dropping a pair of one-run games to No. 9 ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas and took two out of three from No. 11 Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Bulldogs have played 13 of their 16 games on the road going 4-5 on true road games and 2-2 in neutral site games.

From the 2020 team, eight of the top nine batters by average are back led by Tyler Rando who hit .352. Stephen Lund has a team-high four home runs.

On the mound, two-time All-WCC selection Alek Jacob along with 2019 WCC All-Freshman Mason Wells are back to provide a solid righty-lefty combination but the pitching staff is largely unproven beyond them.
