SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Quinn Mathews tossed five scoreless innings and Nick Brueser drove in four runs to lead Stanford to an 8-0 victory over Santa Clara baseball on Friday.

Four Cardinal pitchers combined on a two-hitter with Mathews (1-0) striking out eight and walking three for the win. Stanford was only four outs away from a no-hitter in the Broncos' home opener.

Brauser went 3-for-4 and Christian Robinson had two RBIs for Stanford (2-0).

After Brauser launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, over the left field wall in the second inning, the Cardinal broke the game open with three runs in the sixth.

Leading 3-0, Stanford scored one on an error by a throwing error by third baseman Connor Henriques and one batter later Christian Robinson had a two-run single up the middle off reliever Locke Bernhardt.

Santa Clara (1-4) had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom half of that inning. Coleman Brigman and Jason Dicochea walked, and Mike Bowes was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, but Austin Weiermiller struck out Ryan McCarthy to end the threat.

The Cardinal were working on a no-hitter until Jake MacNichols, who on Thursday tied the school record for career home runs (38), laced a single to center field with two outs in the eighth inning.

Brock Jones and Cody Hill each scored three runs for the Cardinal.

Weiermiller tossed two hitless innings and Brandt Pancer pitched the final two frames.

Freddie Erlandson (0-1) started and suffered the loss for Santa Clara after surrendering three runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings of work.
