Baseball Edged by Pepperdine in Sunday’s Series Finale

MALIBU, Calif. - Billy Cook's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in Pepperdine's 3-2 win over Santa Clara baseball in Sunday's series finale.

Cook turned on the first pitch from Freddie Erlandson and sent it over the left field wall to break a 2-all tie and give the Waves (17-22, 9-12) a series win.  The home run was his 13th of the season to lead the West Coast Conference, one ahead of teammate Justin Lutes.

With the one run lead, Trevor Kniskern tossed the final three innings, keeping the Broncos off the board to close out the game to pick up his first save of the season.  Michael Mahony (1-1) got the win after getting two outs in the top of the sixth.

In the top of the ninth, Santa Clara (15-29, 8-19) put the tying runner at second and the go ahead runner on first with no out.  Tony Boetto's bunt attempt was fielded by Kniskern who threw out the lead runner, Jason Dicochea, at third.  On the play, Dicochea was called for an interference after his head first slide took out the third baseman who tried to throw to first.  The interference call resulted in two outs and the Broncos still had the tying runner at first but Kniskern struck out Jake MacNichols to end the game.

The Broncos knotted the game up at 2-all in the top half of the sixth on Austin Reyes' RBI single up the middle to plate Dawson Brigman.  Both Bronco runs were driven in by Reyes who led the game off with a home run in the opening frame.

Reyes and Coleman Brigman had two hits apiece for the Broncos.

The Santa Clara pitching staff had an effective outing with four hurlers tossing two innings each to allow seven hits and just one earned run.  The two unearned runs given up by starter Russell Grant II were the result of a three-base throwing error by Reyes.

The only earned run against the Broncos came on Cook's home run off Erlandson (0-6) who took the loss.

Cook reached base in all four plate appearances going 3-for-3, scoring a pair and drawing a walk.
