Baseball Downs San Francisco in Final Game of the Season

SAN FRANCISCO - Three solo home runs and solid pitching by Freddie Erlandson and Locke Bernhardt lifted Santa Clara baseball to a 3-1 win over San Francisco in the season finale on Sunday.

Ryan McCarthy, Eamonn Lance and Matt Jew homered for Santa Clara (18-33) while Erlandson and Bernhardt allowed one unearned run to salvage the three-game nonconference series after dropping the first two games.

Facing Dons starter Grant Young, both McCarthy and Lance went deep in the second and third innings to give the Broncos an early 2-0 lead.  For McCarthy, it was his fourth home run of the season and the third for Lance.

San Francisco (25-28) got a run, aided by a Bronco error, in the home half of the fourth on Thomas McCarthy's RBI single to cut the Santa Clara lead in half, 2-1.

The Dons threatened in the fifth, putting runners in scoring position but Erlandson got Jacob Westerman to fly out to keep it a one run game.

Erlandson (1-7) earned his first win of the season as he allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out four before giving way to Locke Bernhardt to start the sixth.

Bernhardt retired all 12 batters he faced to pick up the first save of his Bronco career.  The right-hander struck out four, induced three ground outs and five fly outs.

In the sixth, Jew hit his fourth home run of the year against Owen Stevenson to push the lead back out to two runs, 3-1.  Stevenson was the fifth of eight pitchers rolled out by San Francisco in the game.

Young (1-1) took the loss for the Dons giving up two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Austin Reyes went 2-for-4 to finish the season with a .304 batting average.
