LOS ANGELES - LMU took the West Coast Conference series opener over Santa Clara baseball 5-2 on Friday night behind stellar pitching by Josh Agnew who allowed two runs over seven innings and an offense that collected 11 hits.
Agnew (5-1) threw 103 pitches scattering three hits and striking out five. The right-hander did not issue a walk and hit one batter to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The 3-4-5 hitters for LMU (15-25, 8-11) – Julian Bury, Alec Cargin and Diego Baqueiro - went a combined 7-for-11 and scored four runs.
Tony Boetto drove in both runs for Santa Clara (12-24, 5-14) including a solo home run in the top of the seventh to cut the Lions lead to 3-2, however, LMU answered with two runs in the home half of the inning.
Cargin and Baqueiro singled off Skylar Hales to start a two out rally. Facing new pitcher Alex Waldsmith, Matthew Piotrowski and Tommy Delgado followed with RBI singles to give the Lions a three run cushion at 5-2.
Holden Christian came in relief of Agnew and tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his third save of the season.
The Broncos got on the board first on Boetto's sacrifice fly to plate Mike Bowes in the second inning. Bowes led the inning off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of errors by the catcher and the right fielder on a back pick attempt at first.
LMU responded with two runs in the home half of the second. Cargin and Baqueiro singled and doubled before coming home on two wild pitches by starter Russell Grant.
Grant (0-5) took the loss giving up those two runs on three hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings.
