Baseball Unable to Complete Comeback Against San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Paul Kunst and Thomas Luevano each drove in three runs to help lead San Diego to a 6-4 victory over Santa Clara baseball on Sunday.

Kunst had a bases clearing three-run double and Luevano launched a three-run homer during a fifth-inning rally for the Toreros (25-8, 11-4) in the West Coast Conference series finale.

Santa Clara (12-23, 5-13), which had 10 hits, rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame.

After Austin Reyes, who went 3-for-5, smacked his third home run of the season off San Diego starter Carter Rustad, Jason Dichochea doubled home Coleman Brigman to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Dichochea came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Jew, but the San Diego pitching shut the door, allowing just two of the final 16 batters to reach base.

Jack Hyde (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Toreros who completed the three-game sweep. After allowing Brigman and Dicochea to reach base in the fifth, Hyde retired the final six Broncos he faced.

Ryan Robinson tossed two scoreless innings and Kieran Shaw pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the season for the Toreros who were held to just seven hits.

Despite allowing only two runs, starter Locke Bernhardt (2-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered four hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Brandon Buckley was nearly perfect in his 4 1/3 innings of work for the Broncos. He retired all but Luevano who walked in the seventh.

Buckley entered the game in the fifth in relief of Nick Sando who surrendered the key hits to Kunst and Luevano.

Kunst's double down the left field line drove home Angelo Peraza, Will Worthington and Caleb Ricketts. Two batters later, Luevano sent the first pitch from Sando over the left field wall.

Dicochea doubled home Reyes in the first to open the scoring. The Broncos had an opportunity to add to the lead in the third, but they left the bases loaded.
