Bats Come Alive in Baseball’s Series Finale Win Over LMU on Sunday

LOS ANGELES - Santa Clara baseball pounded out 14 hits and Jason Dicochea drove in four runs in the 11-7 win over LMU to take the series finale on Sunday and snap an eight-game losing skid.

The Broncos (13-25, 6-15) got five of those hits in the third inning, scoring five runs to turn a one run deficit into a 6-2 lead and never looked back.  Santa Clara sent nine batters to the plate as Dicochea and Matt Jew each drove home two runs in the frame and Ryan McCarthy batted in one run.  All the hits came against Lions reliever Jimmy Galicia who took over for starter Alex Burge in the top of the second, an inning after Burge was struck by an Austin Reyes liner in the leg.

Reyes, Dicochea and McCarthy all had three hits.  Jew went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Dawson Brigman also two hits.

LMU (16-26, 9-12) chipped away at Santa Clara's four run lead with a run in the third and two runs in the fourth to get within 6-5.

In the bottom of the third, LMU had three-straight base hits, the last one by Tommy Delgado to score Diego Baqueiro to trim the lead to 6-3.

Julian Bury's two-RBI single in the fourth got the Lions to within a run.

Santa Clara halted LMU's momentum with four runs in the seventh.  McCarthy, who went 3-for-4, got things started for the Broncos with a leadoff single. Reyes doubled in a run and Dicochea singled in two runs, his second two-RBI base hit of the game.  With the bases loaded, Jew drew a walk to plate Coleman Brigman for the fourth run of the inning to put the game out of reach at 10-5.

Reyes hit a solo home run in the seventh off Holden Christian, the first earned run given up by the left-handed reliever in 38 1/3 innings.

LMU had 13 hits with Delgado, Baqueiro and Alex Lambeau each collecting two hits.  Matthew Piotrowski had a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Alex Reelfs (3-1) came in relief at the start of the fourth and threw 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs to pick up the win.

The losing pitcher was Galicia (2-7) who gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings.
