SANTA CLARA, Calif. – San Diego got strong production from the top of the lineup and starter Conner Thurman tossed six solid innings in the Toreros 9-4 win over Santa Clara baseball on Saturday. San Diego has now won the first two games of the series.
San Diego (24-8, 10-4) collected 13 hits in the game as each of the top four hitters in the order had multiple hits and drove in at least one run. Paul Kunst and Shane McGuire went 2-for-5 while Cody Jefferis went 3-for-4 and cleanup hitter Thomas Luevano went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs. Kunst also scored three times.
Thurman (5-2) threw 101 pitches over six frames, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out 10 to pick up his fifth win of the season.
Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Santa Clara (12-22, 5-12) scored two runs on an RBI grounder by Jason Dicochea and a sacrifice fly by Mike Bowes to cut the deficit to one run.
The Toreros answered with three runs on four hits in the seventh to push the lead out to 7-3. Luevano had a two-RBI double to plate Kunst and McGuire.
San Diego tacked on two more runs in the eighth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Kunst and Jefferis.
Coleman Brigman hit a solo home run in the ninth off Ivran Romero for the final scoring margin of the game. It was his third hit of the game to lead the Broncos. Romero pitched the final three innings to pickup his third save.
Broncos starter Freddie Erlandson (0-4) gave up three runs over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
