Baseball Drops Series Finale to Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Austin Elder drove home three runs and Christopher Campos had two RBIs to help Saint Mary's earn a split in a four-game nonconference series against Santa Clara baseball.

Elder's pinch hit, three-run double in the seventh snapped a 4-all tie and the Gaels (25-26) went on to post an 8-4 win over the Broncos on Sunday.

Mike Bowes knocked home three runs and scored two times for the Broncos (17-31) who twice overcame deficits in the game.

Starter Ky Bush (7-5) picked up the win for Saint Mary's. He surrendered seven hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out 11 in his six innings.

Chris Santiago went 3-for-4 with four runs scored for the Gaels, who had 12 hits, but Elder had the key at-bat of the game in the seventh.

Batting for catcher Marc Goulart, Elder laced a two-out 2-0 pitch off reliever Alex Waldsmith for a double to left field to knock home Santiago, Jack Murphy and Justin Banks.

Trailing 8-4, the Broncos had two on with two outs in the eighth with Jake MacNichols at the plate, but reliever Michael Hobbs induced a pop up.

Jack Snook pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Gaels.

After Campos had an RBI single in the top of the first, Bowes smacked his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left field, in the bottom half of the inning.

Saint Mary's scratched out single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Javy Espinoza's RBI single in the sixth extended the lead to 4-2, but the Broncos answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.

Jason Dicochea led off with a single and Bowes doubled him home. Tony Boetto then followed with an attempted sacrifice bunt that turned into a base hit which ended up scoring Bowes who came all the way around to score when Goulart threw the ball away trying to get out Boetto at first base.

Skylar Hales (0-2), who allowed two men to reach in the seventh, suffered the loss. He pitched three innings, allowing three hits and three runs (all earned).

Dicochea was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Austin Reyes went 2-for-5 with one run scored for the Broncos.
