BARCELONA, Spain - Santa Clara men's basketball improved to 2-0 on their foreign tour on Friday after defeating their opponent (who has asked to remain anonymous) by a final of 65-57.
Before lacing up their sneakers, the Broncos took in the sights of beautiful downtown Barcelona, visiting the world famous la Sagrada Famila, the largest unfinished Roman Catholic Church in the world.
Once the tour was over, Santa Clara turned their attention to the hardwood and played a very consistent 40 minutes of basketball. The Broncos scored the first six points of the night and never looked back, only losing the lead briefly in the second quarter. Led by 11 first half points from sophomore Brandin Podziemski, SCU took a 38-36 lead into the locker room. The Broncos then played even better in the third and fourth quarters, building a 16-point lead inside the final seven minutes of the game. Podziemski finished the game as the team's leading scorer for the second-straight game, securing 19 points in the winning effort. Senior Jaden Bediako scored 12 points as the only other Bronco to reach the double-digit scoring plateau. In total, 9-of-10 players that saw the court for SCU put their name on the scoring sheet. Freshman Kosy Akametu scored nine points while senior Parker Braun secured seven points.
The most impressive stat of the night was the rebounding margin in which the Broncos dominated with a 56-33 advantage. That includes a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Jacob Holt led the way individually 11 boards and now has 21 through two games on the tour in 40 minutes of work. Bediako pulled down nine of his own to nearly secure a double-double.
Santa Clara is now off for Paris where they will have a couple of days to recover before taking on Paris Basketball in their final game of the foreign tour.
