SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball sophomore guard Brandin Podziemski has earned WCC Player of the Week honors following a sensational two-game start to his Santa Clara career.
The Greenfield, Wisc. product led the Broncos to a 2-0 start by averaging 32.0 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. He is one of just four players in NCAA D1 in the last decade to average 30 points and 10 rebounds through the first two games of the year. He is also the first player in school history and the first WCC player since at least 2000 to begin his career with back-to-back 30-point games.
"Brandin certainly had an outstanding first week of the season," head coach Herb Sendek said. "His production and competitiveness on both ends of the floor were instrumental in our first two wins."
Podziemski's big week got started against Eastern Washington where he stuffed the stat sheet with 30 points, nine rebounds, five steals and two assists. He followed that performance up with an even more impressive outing against Georgia Southern, knocking down 6-of-8 3-point attempts and 10-of-16 total field goal attempts to score a career-high 34 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. His 34 points are the most by a Bronco since Jared Brownridge scored 38 against Portland on Jan. 30, 2016.
Podziemski is the first Bronco to tally multiple 30-point games in his debut season since Brownridge in 2013-14. He's also the first since Brownridge in 2014 to score 30 in back-to-back games.
This is the first time that Santa Clara men's basketball has had a player earn WCC Player of the Week honors since Trey Wertz on Dec. 24, 2018.
Podziemski and the Broncos will look to continue their great start tonight against Utah State in Logan, Utah.
