Men's Hoops Opens WCC Play Thursday Vs. USF

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After putting a stamp on non-conference play by finishing with a 12-3 record, second-most in program history, Santa Clara men's basketball will look keep their hot start going as they gear up to host San Francisco on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. PT inside the Leavey Center in what will serve as the WCC-opener for both programs. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.

NOTES

  • The Broncos led the WCC with 12 non-conference wins, their second-most in program history. 

  • Santa Clara has won their last five WCC openers dating back to the 2017-18 season.
  • The Broncos are set to open league play against the Dons in their eighth-striaght home game.  SCU is 23-5 in home games dating back to the start of the 2021-22 season and are 9-1 on the year.

  • SCU finished non-conference play on a four-game win streak, punctuated by a 15-pt victory over Boise State (73-58). Carlos Stewart scored 25 pts while Brandin Podziemski had a double-double with 18 pts and 10 reb. 

  • Keshawn Justice is just 15 points shy of moving into the top-20 on the school's career scoring list. 

  • Justice is fourth nationally in 3PT attempts (118) and assist-to-turnover ratio (4.00), and 17th in 3PT made (40). 

  • The Broncos have had two players score 20 or more on three occassions. 

  • Brandin Podziemski has won WCC Player of the Week honors twice in the first five weeks of the year. He's the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge in 2016-17 with multiple WCC POTW honors. 

  • Podziemski ranks second in the WCC in rebounding (8.7) and fourth in PPG (18.3). He ranks 8th nationally in points (275), fourth in steals (35), seventh in FG attempts (209) and 11th in rebounds (130).

  • Carlos Stewart ranks eighth in the WCC in ppg (14.7) and third in FT percentage (86.0). He has scored 20-plus pts in three of the last four games. 

  • Santa Clara ranks 34th nationally in rebounds per game (39.9) and 21st in defensive rpg (28.7) 

  • Podziemski is second in the WCC and is 10th nationally with six double-doubles. 

  • Jaden Bediako is 2nd in the WCC with 19 blocked shots. The Broncos are 3rd as a team with 3.9 per game. 

  • Herb Sendek has 522 victories, good for 66th all-time in NCAA D1 history.

  • The Dons finished non-conference play with an 11-4 record that included some big victories over  No. 25 Arizona State, Wichita State, Fresno State and UNLV. Led by first year head coach, Chris Gerlufsen, USF is averaging 75.6 ppg while allowing just 66.6, good for second-best in the WCC. The Dons are averaging 10 treys per game, which leads the conference and is 15th nationally. Khalil Shabazz and Tyrell Roberts have been a solid 1-2 punch for the Dons with 14.7 and 14.5 ppg, respectively.

  • As the Broncos' most consistent opponent throughout the years, this will be the 231st meeting between the programs in a rivalry that dates back to 1908. Santa Clara holds the slim advantage 116-114, but the Dons won both games a year ago, including a 74-58 final in the Leavey Center.
