Broncos Complete Comeback In OT To Take Down Wyoming, 89-85

SALT LAKE CITY – Santa Clara men's basketball picked up yet another big non-conference victory on Wednesday, using overtime to defeat Wyoming in an 89-85 thriller at the Bruin Arena on the campus of Salt Lake Community College.

The Broncos (6-2) have won three-straight games and will now begin a whopping nine-game homestand throughout the entire month of December beginning on Saturday against Sacramento State.

All five starters scored in double figures in the winning effort with senior Jaden Bediako (15 points and 11 rebounds) and sophomore Brandin Podziemski (19 points, 10 rebounds) each posting a double-double. Bediako had a particularly strong outing with four blocks and four assists on top of his 7-for-8 shooting performance. Carlos Stewart scored 19 to tie for the team-lead, was a career-best 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and had a pair of steals that led the breakaway dunks. Parker Braun tallied a season-best 16 points while Keshawn Justice secured his fourth-straight game in double figures with 14 points and three triples.

For the second-straight game, Santa Clara shot better than 50 percent from the floor, finishing the game with a 35-of-66 mark for a season-best 53.0 percent clip. The Broncos also knocked down a season-high 10 3-pointers.

Wyoming (3-4) also shot the ball well at a 53.2 percent clip (33-of-62) and a 12-for-23 mark from beyond the arc. However, 11 of those 12 triples came in the first half, which the Cowboys used to build a 44-36 advantage at the break.

Santa Clara quickly found themselves in a double-digit deficit to start the second half with the Cowboys jumping out to a 48-38 advantage, but the Broncos used an 11-2 run to cut it back to a one-point game after a Braun triple made it 50-49 with 15:51 to go. Wyoming would continue to hold onto that lead, however, and pushed it to as much as six mid-way through the period.

With 2:57 to play, Carlos Stewart made a great defensive play with a steal and slam on the other end to cut the deficit to 72-70. The Cowboys answered with a field goal of their own, but Podziemski drained a triple to give the Broncos their first lead of the half at 75-74 with 1:35 to play.

Wyoming's Jeremiah Oden hit a clutch 3-pointer for the Cowboys on the ensuing possession to regain the lead at 77-75, but Stewart once again came up big for SCU by drawing a foul and knocking down both freebies to tie the game at 77. The Broncos got a defensive stop and had one last crack at winning in regulation, but Podziemski's 3-point attempt fell short in the waning seconds.

In overtime, it was Stewart who yet again came up big when the Broncos needed him most, knocking down two triples on back-to-back possessions to give SCU an 84-83 advantage with 2:23 left in the period. The Cowboys answered with a layup to gain the lead back, but Keshawn Justice got the lead right back on a huge second chance opportunity, tipping in a missed Bediako free throw for the go-ahead score.

Leading by one at 86-85, the Broncos got another defensive stop and Bediako came down with two critical offensive rebounds inside the final 40 seconds to maintain possession and drain precious time off the clock. Wyoming would get the ball one final time after Justice was fouled and went 1-for-2 at the stripe, but their possession was wasted on a turnover. Parker Braun then found a wide-open Justice on the inbounds pass for an easy lay-in and the clinching score as Santa Clara secured the comeback and picked up a big non-conference victory.
