NOTES

  • Santa Clara's 84-72 victory over Eastern Washington is the team's fourth-straight win in season-openers.
  • Brandin Podziemski scored 30 points with nine rebounds and five steals in his SCU debut. He is the first player in program history* to score 30 or more points in his Bronco debut (*game records date back to 1950). His five steals are the most by a Bronco since Jalen Williams came away with five against UC Irvine last season (11/27/21).
  • Carlos Stewart also had a career-best game with 20 points, as did Camaron Tongue with career highs in points (8) and rebounds (6). Carlos Marshall, Jr. scored 12 points in his Santa Clara debut, and Parker Braun put in a great and balanced effort with eight points, nine rebounds and a career high-tying five assists.
  • With the win, Herb Sendek improved to 98-84 in his Santa Clara career. He needs just two more victories to become the eighth coach in program history with 100 wins.
  • Thursday's opponent, Georgia Southern, is coming off a 63-48 loss at San Jose State in their season opener. The Eagles were selected to finish 11th in the Sun Belt in their preseason poll after finishing with a 13-16 overall record last season.
  • This will be just the second-ever meeting between the programs. Santa Clara came out on top in the previous installment, 86-66, on Dec. 16, 1994 at the UAB Classic in Birmingham, Ala. Four Broncos scored in double figures that day, including Steve Nash (10).
  • Santa Clara is coming off one of their most successful seasons in recent history. The Broncos finished third in the WCC with a 10-5 record - their best finish in conference play since 2006-07, and were 21-12 overall giving SCU their most wins of the Sendek Era and the most for the program since 2012-13.
  • The Broncos were selected to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) - their first postseason tournament appearance since 1996.
  • Other highlights from last season include the Broncos' landmark victories over No. 22 Saint Mary's and BYU
  • For the first time in program history, Santa Clara has a pair of Gatorade State Players of the Year on their current roster - sophomores Carlos Stewart (Louisiana) and Brandin Podziemski (Wisconsin).
  • Like many teams, Santa Clara took advantage of the offseason by going on an overseas excursion for a 10-day trip full of team bonding, sightseeing and basketball. The Broncos had extended stays in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, as well as Paris, France. Santa Clara played a game in each city, finishing with a 2-1 record. SCU defeated Baloncesto Estudiantes, 77-63, in Madrid and took down Joventut, 65-57, in Barcelona before falling to the tremendously talented Paris Basketball, 122-88.
