Broncos Host No. 9/10 Zags On Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Two of the top teams in the WCC men's basketball standings are set to square off tomorrow evening inside the Leavey Center as Santa Clara men's basketball hosts No. 9/10 Gonzaga for a 7:00 p.m. tip. The game will be broadcast live on NBC Bay Area Plus and those inside the Bay Area will also be able to stream it on the WCC Network.

NOTES

  • The Broncos return to the Leavey Center for their 13th home game this season. SCU is 10-2 in the first 12. 

  • SCU is 2-1 in WCC play following an 89-79 win at Pepperdine. Podziemski finished with 27 pts, 10 reb and 6 ast while Braun (16) and Stewart (14) also scored in double figures.

  • Podziemski leads the WCC and is 9th nationally with seven double-doubles. He ranks second in the WCC in RBG (8.6) and third in PPG (18.8). Podz also ranks 5th nationally in points (339), 4th in steals (40), 6th in FG attempts (252) and 11th in rebounds (154).

  • Keshawn Justice ranks 19th in school history in career scoring (1,396) and needs just three more points to tie for 18th. 

  • Justice ranks third nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.67). 

  • Justice also ranks eighth nationally with 133 3-point attempts, 21st with 46 made treys and is second in the WCC with 2.56 treys per game. 

  • Carlos Stewart is tied for ninth in the WCC in ppg (14.8) and second in FT percentage (85.5)

  • Stewart has scored 20 points in three of the last seven games.

  • Santa Clara ranks 24th nationally in rebounds per game (39.9 and is plus-seven in rebounding margin.

  • The Broncos lead the WCC (24th nationally) with 14.1 fouls per game.

  • Podziemski won WCC Player of the Week honors twice in the first five weeks of the year.  He's the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge in 2016-17 with multiple WCC POTW honors. 

  • Jaden Bediako is tied for the WCC lead with 21 blocks while Parker Braun is tied for fourth with 19. The Broncos are 3rd as a team with 3.7 per game. 

  • Herb Sendek has 524 victories, tied for 65th most all-time in D1 history.

  • No. 9/10 Gonzaga sits atop the WCC standings with a 2-0 mark in league play and 13-3 overall. Led by Mark Few in his 24th season at the helm, the Bulldogs are coming off a thrilling 77-75 victory over San Franciso on the Hilltop, knocking down the game-winning shot with just eight seconds to play. The Zags have three players averaging 11 or more points per game with preseason Player of the Year pick Drew Timme leading the charge with an average of 21.9, which leads the WCC and ranks seventh nationally. Gonzaga is the nation's top shooting team at 52.2 percent and rank sixth nationally at 86.2 points per game. 

  • Saturday's game will be the 99th all-time between the programs. Gonzaga has controlled the series historically with a 68-30 advantage. The Zags won both meetings last season, first 115-83 in Santa Clara before holding on for a 81-69 victory in Spokane, which clinched the WCC regular season title. The Broncos' last victory over the Zags came on Jan. 20, 2011 - an 85-71 win in Santa Clara.

Thursday's game can watched live on NBC Bay Area Plus. Greg Heister, Dan Dickau and Richard Fox will have the call live from the Leavey Center. Viewers in the Bay Area can also watch live on the WCC Network via Watch Stadium.
