Broncos Head To Malibu For Thursday Evening WCC Showdown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball is set to play in their first game away from the Leavey Center since November on Thursday as the Broncos gear up for a Thursday night showdown against Pepperdine at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.

NOTES

  • The Broncos are playing in their first road/neutral site game since Nov. 30.

  • SCU opened WCC play with a 1-1 record against rivals USF and Saint Marys. Santa Clara fell 67-64 in their last outing vs. SMC. Brandin Podziemski had 19 pts/9 reb while Carlos Stewart (13) and Keshawn Justice (10) also scored in double figures.

  • SCU shot 91.3 percent from the free throw line (21-of-23) against Saint Mary's - their best percentage since 2019. 

  • Justice moved into the top-20 on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,388 pts. He needs just 11 more to move up to 18th. 

  • Justice is eighth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.53) and 3-point attempts (127). He leads the WCC in both total 3-pointers made (44) and treys per game (2.59).

  • Podziemski ranks third in the WCC in both ppg (18.4) and rpg (8.5).He ranks 7th nationally in points (312), 4th in steals (39), 7th in FG attempts (234) and 11th in rebounds (144).

  • Carlos Stewart ranks ninth in the WCC in ppg (14.8) and second in FT percentage (88.6).

  • Stewart has scored 20 pts in three of the last six games.

  • Santa Clara ranks 37th nationally in rebounds per game (39.6).

  • The Broncos rank second in the league in free throw percentage (73.6).

  • Podziemski is second in the WCC and 14th nationally with six double-doubles. 

  • Podziemski won WCC Player of the Week honors twice in the first five weeks of the year.  He's the first Bronco since Jared Brownridge in 2016-17 with multiple WCC POTW honors. 

  • Jaden Bediako is tied for the WCC lead with 21 blocks while Parker Braun is tied for fourth with 19. The Broncos are 3rd as a team with 3.9 per game. 

  • Herb Sendek has 523 victories, good for 66th all-time in NCAA D1 history. He needs one more to tie for 65th. 

  • With a 12-3 mark, SCU tied for their 2nd most non-conference wins in program history

  • Pepperdine checks into Thursday's contest just shy of .500 with a 7-8 mark, including an 0-1 start to WCC play. The Waves fell in their conference opener at Gonzaga, 111-88. Led by fifth-year head coach Lorenzo Romar, who is in his eighth total season at the helm, Pepperdine ranks second in the WCC in scoring offense with 78.5 ppg on 47 percent shooting. The Waves rank in the top 30 nationally in 3-point shooting as well with a 38.1 percent clip. They also have fared well on the boards with their 28 defensive rebounds per game leading the WCC and ranking 14th nationally. Maxwell Lewis has been the Waves' top offensive threat, ranking second in the WCC with 19.4 ppg. 

  • This will be the 146th meeting all-time on the hardwood between the Broncos and Waves. Santa Clara leads the series 81-64 and won the lone meeting last season - an 89-73 final in Malibu.
