SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Turnovers plagued Santa Clara women's basketball in a 54-46 defeat to Long Beach State Friday evening at Leavey Center.
The Broncos (4-4) turned the ball over 26 times while forcing just nine from the 49ers (3-5). Long Beach State held a 15-3 advantage in points off turnovers with another major difference in the game coming from the 19 more field goal attempts for the 49ers.
The Broncos shot 39.5-percent from the floor to Long Beach State's 33.9-percent, but Santa Clara made 17 field goals with the 49ers making 21.
Despite all the trouble, the Broncos led all the way until the third quarter when they went ice cold. Santa Clara didn't score for over nine minutes in the period and Long Beach State took advantage with a 12-0 run that turned a four-point deficit into a 38-30 49ers lead. Lauren Green led the charge with five points and Aaryon Green finished it off with four in a row.
Jasmine Hardy and Shanaijah Davison led the 49ers offense with almost half the team's combined points. Hardy scored a game high-tying 15 while connecting on three 3-pointers. Hardy scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Santa Clara got off to a good start and a 6-0 run on triples from Lindsey VanAllen and Lexie Pritchard late in the first quarter gave the Broncos a 17-9 lead. Addi Walters added a 3-pointer to start the second quarter that gave her team a game-high nine-point lead before Long Beach started to chip away.
Ashlyn Herlihy led Santa Clara with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field while grabbing six rebounds. Lauren Yearwood added 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting with VanAllen grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds.
