Balanced Attack Lifts Women's Basketball To Overtime Road Win Against Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. – Five players in double figures helped lead Santa Clara women's basketball to a 94-87 overtime win at Saint Mary's Thursday night in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Lindsey VanAllen and Merle Wiehl stepped up in the extra period, scoring 14 of the team's 16 points, while also leading the Broncos (11-17, 5-12 WCC) in scoring on the night with 21 and 17 respectively.

Fourteen of Wiehl's career high 21 came in the first half with none in the second before seven in overtime. She was also 6 of 11 from beyond the arc, both career highs, while grabbing seven rebounds. VanAllen went 5-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.

The game ended up in overtime after both teams made buckets in the final two seconds. Ashlyn Herlihy connected on a jumper in the paint with two seconds left in regulation to give Santa Clara a 78-76 lead. After a timeout by the Gaels (11-17, 6-11 WCC) moved the ball to half court, Sam Simons hit a contested jumper at the buzzer to even the score again.

Herlihy ended the night with a double-double, her third of the season, with 12 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 5-for-8 from the field. Lana Hollingsworth scored a career high 14 points and Emily Wolph added 12.

Santa Clara also knocked down a season high 13 3-pointers, but Saint Mary's managed even more, going 14 of 28 from beyond the arc.

An 8-0 run over 1:48 briefly put Saint Mary's on top. Tyra Moe's back-to-back 3-pointers made it a 66-65 game with 6:03 to go but VanAllen answered with a triple on the ensuing possession to put the Broncos right back on top.

Moe was one of four Gaels in double figures with 16 and hit four from downtown. Madison Holland all players with 23 and was 9 of 10 from the free throw line with Simons adding 22 and eight rebounds. Taycee Wedin scored 14 and also connected from deep four times.

The Gaels rattled off eight points in a row to cut a 10-point deficit down to just two with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Holland capped the run with a pair of three throws.

Back-to-back buckets by VanAllen in between two free throws and a 3-pointer at 3:06 in the third from Lana Hollingsworth made it a 9-0 run and pushed Santa Clara's lead out to 57-50.

Santa Clara got hot from the field in the second quarter and hit five field goals in a row and used it to go on a 14-3 run to take the lead for the first time. Naomi Jimenez hit a pair of jumpers and Wiehl hit two 3-pointers, the second of which made it 33-29 with 3:43 to go in the first half.

Saint Mary's responded right back with a 6-0 run behind triples from Moe and Wedin.

The Broncos weren't fazed and scored the next eight over 1:11, with Wiehl hitting her fourth 3-pointer of the half and Lindsey VanAllen capping the run with an and-one that put her team up 41-35 at the 52 second mark.
