Women's Basketball Loses Close Contest at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – A basket in the final minute decided the game as Santa Clara women's basketball fell at Cal 69-65 in a back and forth contest Saturday evening.

Evelien Lutje Schipholt scored nine points in a row for the Golden Bears (7-2) late in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning layup that broke a 65-all tie with just 52 seconds remaining.

The Broncos (4-5) had a look to tie on the ensuing possession but Tia Hay missed a jumper. After just one of two from the line by Cal gave Santa Clara a chance, Lindsey VanAllen's 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go was also off the mark.

Lutje Schipholt finished with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting and added seven rebounds. Jaeyln Brown led all scorers with 26 points and added 11 rebounds. Chen Yue also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

Santa Clara held Cal to 0-for-10 from 3-point land while connecting on eight of their own but the difference was made up at the free throw line. The Broncos got there just three times, connecting on each chance, with Cal going 15 of 20 from the charity stripe.

Down three, Santa Clara scored seven in a row on four points from Merle Wiehl a triple from Hay that gave the Broncos a 63-59 lead with 4:07 to go in the fourth. After Lutje Schipholt continued her hot stretch and briefly gave her team the lead, Ashlyn Herlihy put the Broncos back up 65-63 with a layup at 1:44.

Wiehl ended up with a team high 19 and shot 8-for-13 from the field while connecting on 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Hay added 10 points and had five assists with Herlihy scoring seven and grabbing nine rebounds.

Lauren Yearwood scored all 11 of her points in a row during a three minute and forty second span in the second quarter that included seven points during a 9-0 run that turned a six-point deficit into a three-point lead. Lindsey VanAllen closed out the run, going coast-to-coast off a rebound to make it 36-33 with the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Cal got hot from the floor midway through the first quarter and connected on six field goal attempts in a row. It took the Bears from down three to a 19-13 lead on a layup from Lutje Schipholt with 1:36 left in the period.
