Second Half Rally Leads to Defeat at San Diego for Women's Basketball

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A late rally lifted San Diego to a 50-47 win over Santa Clara women's basketball Thursday afternoon.

With the Broncos (8-11, 2-6 WCC) down three and eight seconds on the clock, Myah Pace made one of two free throws to give Santa Clara a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but after a 30-second timeout, Emily Wolph's 3-pointer was off the mark and the clock expired.

Santa Clara's defense held the Toreros (11-8, 5-3 WCC) to just 30.2-percent shooting from the field but the offense couldn't take advantage, shooting 36.4-percent and turning the ball over 22 times, leading to a 19-8 deficit in points off turnovers.

Despite trailing by as many as 15 in the second half, San Diego used a 15-3 stretch over four minutes in the fourth quarter to take its first lead since 5:55 in the second quarter, capped by a Leticia Soares jumper with 2:59 on the clock.

Tia Hay put the Broncos back on top at the 1:36 mark with a jumper but Madison Pollock responded with an and-one on the other end off of an offensive rebound to put San Diego up 49-47.

San Diego held a 12-1 advantage on the offensive glass and used it for a 17-4 edge in second chance points.

Pace led all scorers with 13 points but was just 3 of 10 from the field while making up the difference at the free throw line, going 7-for-10. Pollock had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds with Soares adding eight points.

The Broncos opened the second half on a 13-2 run that stretched their lead out to a game high 15 points. Tia Hay and Lindsey VanAllen both connected from deep with Ashlyn Herlihy scoring the final five points to make the score 38-23 with 5:37 left in the period.

The tide turned soon after, as an 8-0 run by San Diego followed that got the deficit down to 38-31 after back-to-back jumpers by Pace.

Wolph led Santa Clara with 10 points with Hay and Herlihy each adding seven. VanAllen scored five and pulled down nine rebounds, one off her career high.

After a back and forth start, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run over 1:05 midway through the second quarter to take a lead that would last until the fourth quarter. Wolph started things with a layup and a 3-pointer and Herlihy capped it with two free throws at 5:17 to make it 17-15.
