Wolph Scores 1,000th But Women's Basketball Falls to BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A second half comeback by BYU sank Santa Clara women's basketball 60-51 Thursday evening at home, putting a damper on Emily Wolph becoming the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 points.

Up nine at the half, the Broncos (9-17, 3-12 WCC) went cold in the second half and went 7 of 31 from the field and 3 of 16 from downtown while the Cougars (16-9, 11-4 WCC) were 13-for-25 from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

For the game, Santa Clara shot just 28.6-percent from the field and BYU was at 40.0-percent.

After the Broncos fought back to tie the score late in the third, the Cougars came back with 10 in a row and would get the lead as high as 13 after a 6-0 run later in the period.

Paisley Johnson did the most damage with 28 points, including her 1,000th career point, on 8 of 13 shooting and 4 of 9 from downtown. She was also 8 of 10 from the free throw line and added six rebounds. No other Cougar was in double figures, but Brenna Drollinger did add 10 rebounds and five assists.

In the third, a 6-0 run for Santa Clara evened the score. Ashlyn Herlihy got things going with an and-one and Lindsey VanAllen buried one from deep that made the score 39-all with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

Wolph scored a team high 14, including her 1,000th career point on her final jumper of the night, while connecting four times from beyond the arc. Merle Wiehl added 10 and five rebounds and Tia Hay scored eight, all in the first half.

The Cougars came out of the half and scored the first seven points of the third quarter to get within one. Drollinger and Maria Albiero hit back-to-back 3-pointers with the second making the score 29-28 with 7:22 to go.

They would score another six in a row after a layup from Wiehl to take a lead for the first time since 7:26 in the first quarter.

The Santa Clara defense held the Cougars to just seven points in the second period on 2 of 12 shooting. During the period the Broncos got triples from Wolph, Lana Hollingsworth, Merle Wiehl whose bucket put her team up a game high 29-21 at the half. 

An 8-0 run for Santa Clara over two minutes in the first gave the Broncos their first lead of the night, that they would hold until the third. Wolph led the way with back-to-back 3-pointers and Herlihy capped the run with a layup at 6:01 to make it 13-8.

  • With two blocks, Lauren Yearwood now has 115 in her Santa Clara career, putting her at third all-time. Morgan McGwire (2014-18) is in second place with 138.
  • Santa Clara had 16 assists on 18 made baskets.
