Baseball Splits at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball ended up with a split of a doubleheader at UC Davis on Saturday. The Broncos (3-3) took game one 12-2 but the Aggies (3-3) pitching dominated game two in a 4-0 defeat.

GAME 1
Early and late offense led the way for the Santa Clara offense in the first game of the day.

Four runs in the first two innings, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Efrain Manzo and Robert Hipwell in the second, got the Broncos offense going. Santa Clara would then add three more in the eighth and five in the ninth to pull away.

Manzo was the offensive leader, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks. Malcolm Williams also had three hits with a run scored and an RBI while Coleman Brigman added two hits and a walk with two runs scored and an RBI. Hipwell and Jack Harnisch both added two RBIs.

Cole Kitchen (1-0) started and tossed 4 innings to pick up the win. He allowed just two hits but walked five with three strikeouts. Jared Feikes went 2 innings out of the bullpen and Skylar Hales tossed the final 3 for the save.

Damian Stone had two hits out of the leadoff spot for the Aggies with Mark Wolbert and Nick Leehey both adding RBIs.

Nate Freeman (0-2) got the start for the Aggies and allowed four runs one six hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts while taking this loss.

GAME 2
The second game belonged to Bryan Green (2-0). The Aggies starter tossed 6 shutout innings while punching out 11. He surrendered just three hits and walked three in the victory. Alejandro Huezo got the save while tossing 3 one-hit innings of relief to close things out.

The offense did enough with Jack Gallagher hitting a two-run home run and James Williams III and Joey Wright both knocking in a run as well.

It was a loss for Nick Sando (0-1). The Santa Clara starter gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The bullpen was stellar, throwing 5 innings of shutout ball.

Michael O'Hara had a two-hit game with Dawson Brigman and Manzo adding the other two Bronco Hits.

NEXT UP
The Broncos play their first midweek game Tuesday against San Jose State at 1 p.m.
