Baseball Beats BYU to Open Series

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball started its series with BYU with an 11-6 victory Thursday night from Schott Stadium

With the game tied at 5 after four innings thanks to four-spots from both teams, the Broncos (18-11, 7-6 WCC) offense came alive with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, two more in the seventh, and one in the eighth to pull away.

The bats were led by Robert Hipwell who finished the night with four hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run, while driving in five and scoring three. Coleman Brigman and Thomas Ferroggiaro both had two hits and two RBIs with Johnny Luetzow adding a pair of hits as well.

Blake Hammond (3-1) was brilliant out of the bullpen and picked up the win with 5 2/3 innings of relief. He surrendered an unearned run on five hits and a walk while punching out nine. Cole Kitchen started and ended up with a no-decision in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The lone Cougar (12-20, 5-8 WCC) with multiple hits was Luke Anderson who had two and knocked in a pair of runs. Ozzie Pratt, Austin Deming, and Chad Call all had RBIs as well with Parker Goff scoring twice.

Mason Olson (2-3) got hit around in the start and ended up with the loss. He allowed seven runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
