BYU Hangs on to Beat Baseball Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A late home run proved to be the difference as Santa Clara baseball fell to BYU 5-4 in the rubber match of the WCC series.

After the Broncos (18-13, 7-8 WCC) evened the score at 4 in the sixth, the Cougars (14-20, 7-8 WCC) got a solo shot from Cole Gambill in the top of the eighth that turned into the game-winner.

Santa Clara got the tying run on base with a one-out single from Johnny Luetzow in the ninth and the winning run on first with a hit by pitch but Boston Mabeus was able to get out of it.

BYU ended up hitting three home runs on the day with Luke Anderson and Austin Deming joining Gambill. Anderson also added a double and scored twice with Deming collecting three hits, including a double, and knocking in two.

Jake Porter (2-5) got the win out of the bullpen in 2 perfect innings. Mabeus went the final 1 2/3 for his third save of the year. Ben Hansen picked up a no-decision while tossing 5 innings in the start. He allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Skylar Hales (3-3) took the loss in 3 innings of relief. His lone mistake was the homer by Gambill. He struck out four. Jared Feikes got the start and finished with a no-decision in 3 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks.

Efrain Manzo had two hits, including a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth, and a walk. Robert Hipwell added a hit and drew a walk as well.
