Walkoff Lifts Baseball To Sweep of Villanova

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball swept Villanova in a doubleheader played at Mission College Sunday. The Broncos (9-4) took the first game 8-2 with before walking off the Wildcats (1-13) 5-3 in 11 innings in the finale.

The win in game one was the 100th as a collegiate head coach from Rusty Filter.

Game 1
Plenty of runs and good pitching was the winning formula once again for the Broncos in game one.

It started on the mound with Brandon Gomez who made his first Santa Clara start. Gomez (2-0) allowed just one unearned run over 6 innings of work while punching out seven and not allowing a walk. Blake Hammond tossed the final 3 innings without surrendering a hit with a walk and five strikeouts to pick up the save.

On offense, Dawson Brigman, Robert Hipwell, and Jack Harnisch all had two-hits games. Brigman had a double, a run scored, and an RBI with Hipwell adding a run scored and Harnisch scoring a run and knocking in two.

On the other side, Devin Rivera's team gave him a 1-0 lead after the top of the first but he promptly allowed two runs in the bottom of the frame. Rivera (0-3) ended up going 4 1/3 while giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Cameron Hassert and Craig Larsen both had two hits out of the top two spots in the lineup with both scoring a run and Larsen knocking in a run. August Biggio also had an RBI.

Game 2
The second game of the day turned out to be a pitcher's duel that turned into a walkoff for Santa Clara.

After scoring two in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, the Broncos closed things out in the home half of the 11th. With D. Brigman on second, Coleman Brigman came up and smashed a walk-off two-run home run to left field.

C. Brigman finished the game with three RBIs and D. Brigman scored twice with an RBI. Efrain Manzo was 3-for-5 with two doubles an JonJon Berring also added three hits, including a double. Johnny Luetzow collected a pair of hits.

Skylar Hales (1-1) got the win with 3 innings of stellar relief. He allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out nine.

Cabot Maher (0-1) served up the walk-off home run and took the loss in 1 inning out of the bullpen.

Both starters pitched well but got no-decisions. Nick Sando allowed a run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 5 innings. Sal Fusco tossed 6 innings and gave up a run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts and was in line for the win until Patrick Montfort blew the save by giving up the two runs in the ninth.

Peter Giombetti collected three hits for the Villanova offense. Steve Grober added two hits with two runs scored and Jose Valdez also collected a pair of hits.
