Baseball Drops Saturday Game at UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball dropped the second game of its series at UC San Diego 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos (4-4) found themselves down 4-0 after one inning but fought all the way back to even things up in the sixth. The tie didn't last long as the Tritons (5-5) came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning and added some insurance in the late innings.

Matt Halbach led the UC San Diego offense with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Both Emiliano Gonzalez and Noah Sudyka knocked in a pair of runs.

Izaak Martinez (2-0) got the win with 3 1/3 one-hit shutout innings of relief. He walked three and struck out one. Starter Ryan Forcucci took a no-decision in 3 2/3 innings while giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Freshman Johnny Luetzow had his best came as a collegiate player, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a walk. Robert Hipwell scored two runs and had an RBI with JonJon Berring and Michael O'Hara also knocking in runs. The Broncos managed to take eight walks as a team.

The loss went to August Souza (0-2) who tossed 2 innings. He allowed a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout. Skylar Hales went 3 innings in the start, allowing four runs but just one earned on five hits with four strikeouts.

The series concludes tomorrow at noon, moved up from its original start time of 1 p.m.
