Baseball Advances in WCC Tournament With Win Over Gonzaga

LAS VEGAS – For the first time in program history, Santa Clara baseball has won a game at the West Coast Conference Tournament. The Broncos took down Gonzaga for the fourth game in a row by a final of 4-2 to advance to the double elimination portion of the tournament. The full schedule can be found here.

Pitching led the way for both teams but it was a pair of home runs for Santa Clara (32-18) that proved to be the difference. Coleman Brigman got the scoring going in the fourth with a two-run home run and Ben Steck added a solo shot in the seventh to make it 3-0. The Bulldogs (18-33) rallied with two in the eighth but an insurance run in the bottom of the frame gave the Broncos a little more room.

Cade Pilchard (3-1) started and was fantastic in his 5 innings of work. He allowed just four hits and punched out two. Skylar Hales went the final 4 innings while striking out three to get his fourth save of the season.

Brigman finished the game with two hits and three RBIs with Efrain Manzo and Eamonn Lance both having three hit days. Steck and JonJon Berring had two hits apiece as well.

Gonzaga got multi-hit games from Connor Coballes, Brian Kalmer, and Sam Stem with Stem and Tommy Eisenstat knocking in the team's two runs in the eighth.

Owen Wild (4-7) went 7 1/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs on 12 hits with seven strikeouts.
