Baseball Tops Villanova in Series Opener

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball opened its series with Villanova with an 8-3 win at St. Francis High School on Saturday evening.

The Broncos (7-4) took the lead right away with three runs in the first and would add two more in the fourth and another three-spot in the fifth to create some distance.

The offense was paced by Efrain Manzo and Coleman Brigman who both had big games. Manzo finished the night 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, a walk, three RBIs, and two runs scored. C. Brigman had two hits, including a home run, a walk, and three RBIs.

Cole Kitchen got the start and picked up the win. Kitchen (3-0) allowed a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The Wildcats (1-11) got a run back in the second and scored two in the sixth while threatening to make things interesting but Nico Stanley came in and shut things down the rest of the way.

John Whooley was the only Villanova player with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Three players had an RBI each with three scoring a run.

Chic Degaetano (1-3) ended up with the loss in a 4 1/3 inning start. He allowed eight runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
