Baseball Re-Opens Schott Stadium With Late Inning Heroics

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball re-opened the newly renovated Schott Stadium with an exciting game that saw some late inning heroics lead to a 10-6 win over San Diego on Friday.

With two down and two on in the bottom of the eight and the score tied at six, the Broncos (12-5, 3-1 WCC) used three straight hits, including two-run doubles from Efrain Manzo and JonJon Berring, to take the lead for good.

Manzo had a big game, finishing with two hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored and Berring was a home run shy of the cycle. Malcolm Williams also had a three-hit game and Robert Hipwell scored three runs. Hipwell and Dawson Brigman both went deep.

Blake Hammond (2-0) got the win with 2 1/3 perfect innings of relief while punching out four. Starter Cole Kitchen went 5 2/3 while surrendering six runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts while taking the no-decision.

Each time the Broncos scored, the Toreros (8-11-1, 2-2 WC) had an answer, except in the ninth. Justin Decriscio was the lone San Diego hitter with multiple hits and ended up 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Dustin Allen hit a home run and drove in four runs out of the nine hole.

Ivran Romero (0-3) was great for 3 innings of relief but the last out proved elusive and he ended up with the loss. Romero (0-3) gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. James Sashin started gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings on 11 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
