Baseball Beats UC San Diego for Series Victory

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball won an exciting series finale on Sunday 7-6 over UC San Diego to take the series.

The Broncos (5-4) led 1-0 after three innings and 4-1 after four but the Tritons (5-6) would score five in the fifth and take their first lead of the game. Santa Clara had an answer of its own in the seventh and scored two to retake the lead. An insurance run came across in the top of the ninth which proved huge, as UC San Diego was able to score in the bottom of the ninth as well but left the winning run on base.

Johnny Tarantino had a big day to lead the Broncos offense. He finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Michael O'Hara added two hits and two RBIs as well with JonJon Berring scoring three times.

After starter Nick Sando tossed 4 innings, Brandon Gomez came in and went 3 2/3 innings to pick up hist first Santa Clara win. Gomez (1-0) ended up surrendering four runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Cade Pilchard got the save in an adventurous ninth that saw him give up an unearned run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout.

On the other side, Matt Halbach had a big day at the plate with three hits and three runs scored. Emiliano Gonzalez had two hits and scored a run with Bradlee Preap going 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Aren Alvarez (1-1) took the loss out of the bullpen. In 2 2/3 innings, he gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Anthony Eyanson started and allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
