Baseball Tops Cal Poly on the Road in Midweek Contest

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Early runs were enough to lead to a 7-4 win over Cal Poly for Santa Clara baseball on Tuesday afternoon.

The Broncos (17-11) put up three runs in the first, one in the second, and three more in the third for all their scoring.

The Mustangs (10-19) got on the board with two in the second and put up single runs in the fifth and eighth innings.

Efrain Manzo and Robert Hipwell both had home runs for Santa Clara. Manzo's was a three-run shot in the first and Hipwell's was a two-run shot, bringing home Manzo, in the third. Dawson Brigman set the table with three hits out of the leadoff spot and scored a run and Malcolm Williams added two hits as well.

Cade Pilchard got the win in 3 innings out of the bullpen following up starter Brandon Gomez. Pilchard (3-0) allowed a run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Gomez tossed 3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with two strikeouts. Caden Wooster got his first collegiate save with a perfect ninth.

Cal Poly got a two-hit game from Aaron Casillas who also knocked in a run. Ryan Fenn had a double, a run scored, and an RBI with Joe Yorke and Tate Shimao also driving in runs.

Starter Freddy Rodriguez ended up with the loss in 1 2/3 innings. Rodriguez (0-2) surrendered four runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
