Baseball Tops Cal In Bay Area Showdown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball extended its winning streak to six games with an 8-1 win over Cal on Tuesday night.

It was a close game through five and a half innings as the Broncos (24-15) had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth after the Bears (18-23) got on the board in the top. Santa Clara would score twice in the home half of the sixth and four times in the seventh to pull away.

As good as the offense was late in the game, Caden Wooster (1-0) was better in the early-going and picked up his first career win. Making his first collegiate start, the freshman went 5 shutout innings with a career-high seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and just one walk. In his previous five appearances he had not thrown more than an inning and had tossed 4 2/3 innings total. Overall, Santa Clara pitchers struck out 15.

Michael O'Hara and Eamonn Lance led the offense with three hits apiece. O'Hara had a triple and four RBIs out of the leadoff spot while Lance had two doubles, an RBI, and scored three runs.

Andres Galan (3-2) suffered the loss for Cal. He started and went 3 innings while giving up two runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Max Handron had the lone two-hit game for the Bears' offense and had a double, RBI, and two walks. Four others collected a single each.
