Baseball Drops Midweek Game to San Jose State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara was taken down by San Jose State 9-2 in a midweek contest on Monday.

The Broncos (13-7) scored first but the Spartans (11-9) rode a five-run fourth to victory.

Matt Spear led the offense with three hits, including a home run and a double, and added four RBIs. Theo Hardy also had three hits and two RBIs and Jack Colette had two hits and scored three runs with an RBI.

Nathan Hansen (1-0) got the win in 2 1/3 innings of two-hit shutout relief with a walk and a strikeout. Corey Sanchez made the start and went 2 2/3 innings while taking a no-decision. He allowed a run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Offensively, Coleman Brigman had the best game for Santa Clara. He finished the day with three hits, including two doubles.

It was a bullpen game for Santa Clara who used nine pitchers. Nick Sando tossed 2 scoreless no-hit innings in the start, walking one and striking out one. Jace Root (0-1) struggled in the fourth, allowing six straight hits, and gave up five runs while getting just two outs to take the loss.
