Bats Explode With 21 Runs in Baseball's Win at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – A football game broke out at Joe Etzel Field on Sunday as Santa Clara baseball beat Portland 21-10 in the finale of a three-game series.

The scoring started immediately as the Broncos (28-18, 14-10 WCC) scored eight in the first but the Pilots (26-20, 15-9 WCC) came right back with five in the bottom of the inning. The Broncos would score three more in the second, one in the third, and thee again in the fourth with Portland scoring three in their half of the third. After the scoring slowed down for a bit with single runs for the Pilots in the sixth and eighth innings, the Broncos put up six in the ninth to put the game away.

Every member of the starting lineup had at least one run scored and an RBI with eight starters collecting at least one hit. Beck Steck had five RBIs, thanks to a ninth inning grand slam, and scored a pair of runs. Michael O'Hara also had a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored with Dawson Brigman collecting a team best four hits to go with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Skylar Hales (6-4) went 5 2/3 innings of relief to collect the win with Blake Souza tossing the final 3 1/3 for the save. Hales punched out seven and Souza four. Starter Jared Feikes didn't record an out.

Portland starter Brock Gillis (3-3) only lasted 2/3 of an inning and got hung with the loss. He allowed six runs on two hits with four walks. Of the seven Pilots to pitch, only one didn't give up a run.

Offensively, Nich Klemp was 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI to lead the way. Evan Scavotto and Ty Saunders both added two RBIs with Scavotto and Zach Toglia going deep.

Santa Clara travels to Cal Tuesday for the final midweek game of the season.
