Baseball Completes Sweep of Gonzaga on Senior Day

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball completed its sweep of Gonzaga with a 5-3 win on Senior Day Saturday. The win makes Santa Clara the three-seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament.

The Broncos (31-18, 17-10 WCC) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth but a three-run home run for the Bulldogs (18-33, 14-13 WCC) in the sixth briefly gave them the lead. Santa Clara came right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.

Coleman Brigman led the offense with a pair of hits, including a solo home run. JonJon Berring and Ben Steck, who had a double and a walk as well, knocked in runs with Dawson Brigman, Michael O'Hara, Eamonn Lance, and Malcolm Williams all adding a run scored.

Nick Sando (3-3) came out of the bullpen and tossed 4 1/3 innings to get the win. He allowed three runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Brandon Gomez threw a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Senior August Souza got the start and went 2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Brian Kalmer had the home run for Gonzaga with three other Bulldogs collecting one hit each, Enzo Apodaca's being a double.

Nate Deschryver (4-6) took in the loss in 2/3 of an inning out of the bullpen. He surrendered three runs on two hits with three walks and a strikeout. Matthew Mueller started and went 5 innings in the no-decision. He gave up two runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

NEXT UP
The two teams play again in the WCC Tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m.
