SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Lou Lucas, a 1997 Santa Clara University Athletics Hall of Fame inductee who contributed over 40 years to the athletics department as a baseball player, assistant baseball coach and administrative assistant of travel, passed away on November 19, 2021 at age 90.

Lucas' longstanding career on the Mission Campus began in 1949 when he attended SCU on a baseball scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1953.  The Broncos compiled a 62-39 record during Lucas' tenure as a catcher on the squad.

Following graduation, he reported to active duty in Fort Sill, Oklahoma as an artillery officer to fulfill his obligation of ROTC training at Santa Clara.  Upon earning his teaching credential from San José State, Lucas first taught at his alma mater, Bellarmine College Prep, and then at Santa Clara High School.

While at Santa Clara High, he also helped as an assistant baseball coach at Santa Clara University beginning in 1971 for 20 years.

Lucas retired from Santa Clara High School in 1992 and began volunteering in the athletic department at Santa Clara University.  He handled the travel logistics for all sports during his 19-year run in the department.
