Baseball Can't Complete Sweep at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Santa Clara baseball couldn't finish off a sweep at San Francisco, falling 9-0 Sunday in the finale of the West Coast Conference-opening series.

The Dons (12-10, 1-2 WCC) struck four batters into the game when Gabe Giosso hit a three-run homer. San Francisco had a four-run fourth and followed it with a two-run fifth to account for the day's scoring.

Giosso finished with four RBIs on a pair of hits and Darius Foster was 2-for-4 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot to pace the offense.

Starter Jesse Barron (3-1) tossed 5 shutout innings to get the win. He allowed four hits and walked none while punching out seven.

The Broncos (11-7, 2-1 WCC) best chance to score came in the first when their first three batters all singled to load the bases. The next three batters couldn't drive home a run, however, and the threat was extinguished.

Michael O'Hara and Coleman Brigman both collected two hits with four others chipping in a single each.

Alex Reelfs (1-3) started and got the loss. In 3 2/3 innings, he allowed six runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
