Baseball Seals Series Win With Victory Over LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball secured its second consecutive West Coast Conference series victory with a 11-5 win over LMU on Saturday afternoon. It was the team's fourth win in a row and sixth in the last seven games.

A long first inning saw both teams put their first five batters on base and score two runs with the bases loaded and no outs. The difference in the frame was Broncos (15-7, 4-1 WCC) starter Jared Feikes escaped without any further damage by striking out the next three batters while Lions (6-15-1, 3-2 WCC) starter Matt McClure surrendered three more runs before ending the inning.

After the long first inning, Feikes (5-0) settled in and lasted 5 2/3 innings while collecting the win. He allowed just the two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

McClure (2-3) on the other hand, lasted just 1 1/3innings and allowed six runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout to take the loss.

Things started in the home half of the first with a leadoff home run from JonJon Berring and two batters later Coleman Brigman evened the score with an RBI single up the middle. A sac fly by Matt Jew brought in the third run and Dawson Brigman finished things with a two-run double to left.

Santa Clara's offense continued to hum, putting up single runs in the second and third and four more in the sixth, featuring a three-run double off the bat of John Hanley. The Broncos weren't retired in order all day and finished with 15 hits.

D. Brigman and Michael O'Hara both finished with three hits while Berring, C. Brigman, Jew, and Cal Christofori each had two. The top five batters in the Broncos lineup each scored two runs and seven different players had at least one RBI.

In all, Santa Clara scored 11 unanswered runs before LMU finally got back on the board in the top of the seventh with a blast to left center by Jared Thomas, his second home run in as many games. The Lions would add two more in the eighth but again left the bases loaded. They stranded 14 on the day.

All 10 of the LMU hits came from the top four batters. Leadoff hitter Devan Ornelas and cleanup hitter Diego Baqueiro each had three with Thomas and Benny Casillas both adding two.

NOTES

  • Coleman Brigman extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his on-base streak to all 22 games this season.
  • Michael O'Hara extended his hitting streak to six games.
  • This was Santa Clara's fifth game with double-figure runs scored and the 10th game with double-digit hits.
  • A streak of four straight games with double-digit strikeouts for Bronco pitching was snapped.
