Baseball Drops Midweek Contest at Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Cal Poly's offense got going in the fourth and was too much to overcome as Santa Clara baseball fell 15-6 in a midweek road contest Tuesday.

The Mustangs (14-10) scored four in the fourth and added three in the fifth before exploding for eight in the sixth. The Broncos (15-9) managed to answer each half inning after Cal Poly scored but never more than two at a time, not enough to catch up.

Brooks Lee led the offense with three hits and added two runs scored and an RBI as well as Mark Armstrong drove in four with two hits and two runs scored. The top six batters each scored at least two runs and had at least one hit and one RBI.

Noah Larkin (1-1) started for the Mustangs and got the win in 5 innings. He allowed a run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Four pitchers threw an inning each to close things out.

Santa Clara used its depth, starting Thomas Gould and Nick Bacura for the first time this season with Malcolm Williams making his second start and Robert Hipwell his third.

Gould took advantage of the opportunity with a double, a walk, a run scored, and a pair of RBIs. Bacura also added a double and scored a run with Williams drawing a walk. Regular starter John Hanley added a two-run home run, one of his two hits.

Blake Hammond (0-1) made his first start of the year and took the loss. He lasted 4 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

NOTES

  • Michael O'Hara extended his hitting streak to eight games.
  • This was Santa Clara's 13th game this year with double-digit strikeouts. Their pitchers fanned 14.
