Early Runs Cost Baseball at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Three early home runs proved to be enough as San Diego beat Santa Clara baseball 8-3 Friday night in the series opener.

The Toreros (26-15, 12-7 WCC) fell behind 1-0 right away but came back to tie things in the bottom of the first before two home runs in the second and another in the third put them on top 6-1.

The bombs came from Chase Meidroth who also added a double and two runs scored, Kevin Sim who had a pair of hits, and Jack Costello who also added two hits. Ddustin Allen added two RBIs in the fifth to extend the San Diego lead after it had been trimmed.

Ryan Kysar (2-0) went 6 innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Ian Churchill collected his third save of the year with 3 one-hit scoreless innings of relief while punching out three.

The Broncos (22-18, 10-9 WCC) made things interesting in the fourth with two runs to cut the deficit to 6-3. Dawson Brigman and Cal Christofori both had RBI singles during the inning.

Brigman had a big day going 4-for-4 but was the only Santa Clara player with more than one hit. John Hanley had the other Bronco RBI.

Cole Kitchen (4-3) didn't have it on the mound and lasted just 2 innings in the start. He allowed six runs on eight hits with a walk and took the loss.
