Defensive Woes Cost Baseball in Loss to Pepperdine

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –Santa Clara baseball dropped a sloppy game 10-7 to Pepperdine Saturday afternoon as the two teams combined to commit nine errors.

Things began to unravel for the Broncos (20-17, 9-8 WCC) in the middle innings as they committed two errors in each of the fifth and six innings and another in the seventh. The Waves (20-17, 8-9 WCC) took advantage with four in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one in the seventh to turn a four-run deficit into a 10-7 lead.

Tyler Murrah benefited from the runs in the middle innings as he got the win out of the bullpen. In 2 2/3 innings, Murrah (3-0) allowed three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jack Chester went the final 2 2/3 to collect his first save of the year. Starter Trevor Hinkel got hit around in 2 1/3 innings but was taken off the hook by his offense. He allowed six runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

On offense, Ryan Johnson, Nolan Lingley, and Cole Sheehan all posted two-hit games with Charles Masino, Jacob Rebrook, and Cam Conley all scoring three runs. Grant Schoen had a big day with 4 RBIs and Johnson added two as well.

Alex Reelfs (3-5) ended up taking the loss in 1 inning out of the bullpen. He allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jared Feikes went 4 innings in the start, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts and got a no-decision.

Before things went south for Santa Clara, it was Pepperdine who struggled with its defense and committed three errors over the first three innings as the Broncos scored two in each frame to jump out to the early lead.

JonJon Berring led the offense with a double, a triple, a walk, and a run scored. John Hanley added two hits, including a solo home run, with Michael Diaz and Cal Christofori also adding two hits. Christofori also knocked in a pair of runs.

  • Santa Clara has 15 games with double-figure hits after posting 12 today.
