Baseball Beat in 15 Innings at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – For the second night in a row, Gonzaga walked off against Santa Clara baseball, this time 5-3 in 15 innings.

Tyler Rando was the Zags (31-13, 17-6 WCC) offensive leader all night and ended the game with a two-run home run to left center field on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the 15th. Rando finished the night 4-for-7 with four RBIs and two runs scored and was the only Bulldog with more than one hit.

The home run ruined a gutsy performance from Jared Feikes out of the bullpen. Feikes (5-5) tossed 7 innings of relief while allowing just two hits but got hung with the loss. Starter Skylar Hales was tremendous as well, going 7 innings and allowing one run on four hits.

Brody Jesse (4-3) was the beneficiary and picked up the win in a 1 1/3 innings of relief. In the top of the 15th, he escaped a jam with runners on second and third and no one out by getting a ground out to third with the infield in and a pair of strikeouts.

The Broncos (24-24, 11-15 WCC) offense came early. JonJon Berring doubled in two runs in the second inning and Eamonn Lance added a solo shot in the third.

Lance ended his night with three hits and C. Brigman and Matt Jew both added two.

Santa Clara tagged Gonzaga starter Trystan Vrieling for three runs on five hits in 6 innings. Vrieling ended up with eight strikeouts and Zag pitching fanned 19 on the night.

It looked like Gonzaga had won it in the 10th when C McGee hit a deep drive to centerfield. Coleman Brigman tracked it the whole way and made one of the best catches you will ever see to bring the ball back for the second out of the inning.

The game went into extras because of late runs by the Bulldogs. They scored one in the sixth and tied things with two in the eighth off of Alex Reelfs who allowed the two runs in just 1/3 of an inning.
