Baseball Can't Finish Sweep of LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball's attempt at a sweep came up short in a 4-2 loss in 10 innings to LMU on Sunday afternoon.

In the top of the 10th, the Lions (7-15-1, 4-2 WCC) got the first two on via a hit-by-pitch and a walk. The runners were on second and third with two down when G Weiss' grounder up the middle was fielded cleanly but the throw was wide and both runners came across.

Weiss had a big day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. Cole Roberts also added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Starter Quinn Lavelle kept the Broncos' (15-8, 4-2 WCC) bats quite over 7 innings, allowing just an unearned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts but like in Friday's series opener, once the starter was lifted, things started to unravel.

Reliever Michael Nunez came in and gave up a leadoff double to Cal Christofori and after an out, an infield single and a hit batter loaded the bases. Efrain Manzo, who entered as a pinch-runner in the fourth after designated hitter Eamonn Lance injured himself running the bases, got the tying run home with an RBI groundout.

Nunez (1-0) did end up with the win after throwing the final three innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Matt Jew also picked up an RBI with a sac fly in the fourth to get Santa Clara on the board and Michael O'Hara collected two hits two extend his hitting streak to seven games. Coleman Brigman snapped his 10-game hitting streak but reached twice on hit-by-pitch to extend his on-base streak to 23 games.

Nick Sando (3-1) ended up taking the loss but was solid in 5 innings of relief, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Skylar Hales got the start for and was lifted after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
