SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A three run first inning was more than enough as Conner Roberts shutdown the Santa Clara baseball bats in a 5-0 win for Saint Mary's Friday night from Schott Stadium.
Roberts (3-1) twirled a gem, shutting out the Broncos (18-15, 7-7 WCC) for 7 innings. He allowed just two hits and walked three while striking out five.
On offense, the Gaels (21-14, 5-9 WCC) used a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot by Chris Santiago in the first that put them on top 3-0. A solo shot from Seth Nager in the second extended the lead.
It was a start for Jared Feikes (5-3) who suffered the loss and went 4 2/3 innings while giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout.
The bullpen, however, kept the team in the game with 4 1/3 shutout innings. Blake Hammond did the heavy lifting in 3 1/3 innings while allowing just a walk and striking out five. Cade Connolly recorded two strikeouts in the ninth with Jeffrey Heinrich recording the final out.
Santa Clara mounted a bit of a rally in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with thanks to a pair of walks and a hit by pitch but the clutch hit never came.
Matt Jew finished with two hits and three others each added one. Cal Christofori drew two walks as well.
NOTES
- Eamonn Lance extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
