PROVO, Utah – Santa Clara baseball dropped the finale of a three-game series at BYU 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.
A pair of solo home runs from Efrain Manzo helped the Broncos (17-13, 6-6 WCC) to leads of 2-0 and 3-1, but the Cougars (17-12, 6-6 WCC) would draw even on Joshua Cowden's two-run homer in the fourth before taking the lead for good in the fifth.
Ozzie Pratt and Austin Deming both collected three hits and an RBI with Pratt scoring two runs and Deming one. Brock Watkins also added two hits and a run scored.
Cy Nielson (1-0) got the win in 2 innings of scoreless relief after starter Janzen Keisel allowed three runs on six hits in a 4 inning start.
Santa Clara made things interesting in the ninth that saw Alex Lambeau knock in a run. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as a three-spot in the eighth by BYU made the mountain too high for the Broncos climb.
Manzo was joined by Matt Jew and Diaz in the two-hit club with Jew knocking in a run and Diaz scoring two. Lambeau finished the day 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Jared Feikes (5-2) took the loss for Santa Clara. He started and went 4 innings while allowing five runs, four earned, on seven this with a walk and three strikeouts.
