SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball rode a steady offense to a 7-2 win over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon to take three of four in the series.
The Broncos (4-4) scored in each of the third through seventh innings thanks to a patient approach at the plate and some wildness from the Wildcats (1-7) pitchers. Santa Clara drew seven walks and benefited from three hit-by-pitches as well.
Northwestern didn't struggle to get runners on but couldn't get anyone home and finished with 13 runners left on base. The Broncos left 12 on as well but found the big hit multiple times.
Michael O'Hara led the offense with three consecutive RBI singles and added a run scored as well. Eamonn Lance, Michael Mugan, Dawson Brigman, and Cal Christofori all added RBIs with Mugan picking up two hits.
Cade Pilchard started but ran into trouble in the second. He lasted 1 2/3 innings allowing a run on a hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Alex Reelfs (1-1) came in and got out of the jam before tossing 6 1/3 shutout innings to collect the win. He gave up five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Andrew Pinkston had the best day on offense for the Wildcats, going 3-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch. Bennett Markinson hit a solo shot to leadoff the game and Ethan O'Donnell was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Kellen Pate (0-1) started and suffered the loss. In 3 innings he allowed two runs on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.
