Baseball Beaten in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A monster first was all it took as San Diego beat Santa Clara baseball 17-4 on Saturday night.

The Toreros (27-14, 13-7) scored eight in the first to all but put the game away. They would add four more in the second to erase all doubt and kept scoring throughout the game.

The long ball was huge for San Diego as the team blasted four, led by two from Chase Meidroth who had a monster game. Meidroth finished the night 3-for-5 with seven RBIs and four runs scored. Caleb Ricketts added a home run as well with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored with Jack Costello smacking a solo shot. Six Toreros had multi-hit games, six scored two or more runs, and four had multiple RBIs.

Brycen Mautz (8-1) got the victory in in 5 innings. He allowed four runs on four this with three walks and nine strikeouts.

The Broncos (22-19, 1-10 WCC) scored all their runs in the fourth inning. In the frame, Matt Jew and Malcolm Williams both had two-run singles.

Jew and Coleman Brigman both had two hits in the game with Williams, Efrain Manzo, and Nick Poss each adding a knock.

It was a tough day for Nick Sando (4-3) who entered in the top-10 nationally in ERA. He lasted just 2/3 of an inning and allowed eight runs, four earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
